This gallery is located in a wing built in 1528, to provide a passage between the royal apartments and the chapel of the Trinitarian convent founded by Saint Louis near the palace. Initially reserved for use by the king, it later became a public passageway. 60 meters long and 6 meters wide, the gallery was originally illuminated on both sides. The northern windows were sealed in 1785, at the time of the construction of an adjacent wing. For the decor of the gallery, François 1 commissioned an Italian artist, Rosso, a great admirer of Michelangelo. Working with a team. of French, Italian and Flemish painters and sculptors, Rosso developed a decorating style that united fresco painting and stucco sculpture with wainscoting. |
Elle est située dans une aile élevée en 1528 pour servir de communication entre les appartements royaux et la chapelle du couvent des Trinitaires fondé par saint Louis auprès du château. D'abord réservée au roi, elle devint par la suite passage public. Longue de 60 m et large de 6 m, la galerie était à l'origine éclairée des deux côtés. Les fenêtres nord furent bouchées en 1785, lors de la construction d'une aile adjacente. Pour le décor de la galerie, François 1er fit appel à Rosso, un artiste italien, admirateur de Michel-Ange. Celui-ci, entouré d'une équipe de peintres et de sculpteurs français, italiens et flamands développa un système décoratif associant la peinture à fresque et la sculpture en stuc à un lambris en boiseries. |
