François 1 was responsible for creating the gardens, where water has always played an important role. The gardens were substantially transformed by Henri IV, Louis XIV and Louis Philippe.

English Garden
It assumed its present form around 1812, laid out in the tradition of English gardens of the 18th century. Previously, several gardens were successively planted on the site, among them the Fine Grove planted by François 1. Today, the garden is graced by plane trees, sequoias, tulip trees, and cypress trees of which the oldest were planted during the Second Empire.

Two bronzes installed in 1813, in front of the Louis XV wing, stand out from among the sculptures which embellish the garden: the Fighting Gladiator and the Dying Gladiator (cast in the 17th century based on the antique models). At the end of the wing is found the famous Grotto of the Pines created for François 1 around 1543.

C'est à François 1er que l'on doit la création des jardins, dans lesquels l'eau a toujours joué un rôle important. Ils furent l'objet de transformations, principalement sous Henri IV, Louis XIV et Louis Philippe.

Jardin anglais
Il a pris sa forme actuelle vers 1812, aménagé dans la tradition des jardins anglais du XVIIIe s. Auparavant plusieurs jardins s'étaient succédés à son emplacement dont le jardin des Pins de François 1er. Aujourd'hui on peut y admirer des platanes, des séquoias, des tulipiers ou des cyprès chauves dont les plus anciens ont été plantés sous le second Empire.

Parmi les sculptures qui embellissent le jardin se remarquent devant l'aile Louis XV deux bronzes installés en 1813 : Le Gladiateur combattant et Le Gladiateur mourant (fondus d'après l'antique au XVIIe s.), tandis qu'au bout de l'aile subsiste la célèbre grotte des Pins élevée pour François 1er vers 1543.
