Hanneton

Cockchafer

A Cockchafer is 20 to 30mm long. It remains quite common although in dwindling numbers. The female lays its eggs in the ground and a few weeks later the eggs hatch and produce creamy white grubs called rockworms which can produce considerable damage to crops as they greedily devour all roots. The worms reach the pupation stage three years later. The adults then ruin trees and bushes and in particular young Oaks. The Cockchafer is sometimes a very destructive pest. Depending on weather conditions, it appears in March or April until June or July.
