Il est commun partout dans le nord de la France et uniquement en montagne au sud de la Loire. Son bois, très homogène, aisé au travail, a de multiples usages. C'est un bon combustible. Les faines comestibles fournissaient de l'huile. De l'écorce on tirait la créosote au pouvoir désinfectant.

It is commonly found everywhere north of the Loire River in France and only in mountaineous ranges south of the Loire River. Its wood is very homogeneous, easy to craft and is put to a multitude of uses. It is also good fuel wood. Beechnuts are edible and, in days gone by, were used to make oil. Creosote was obtained from the bark and used as a disinfectant.
