A Fontainebleau, les troubles religieux de tout le royaume, contraignent à quelques ouvrages de sécurité (Pont-levis & fossés) puis ralentissent les travaux qui cessent tout à fait à compter de 1570.

Religious disturbances that were affecting the whole kingdom
prompted the execution of security works at Fontainebleau (draw-bridge and ditches).
Such troubles then slowed down the work, which eventually came to a complete halt in 1570.
Henri III stayed frequently at Fontainebleau. However, the only change he made was to have the draw-bridge removed. The palace then went through a period when it was uninhabited, between 1584 and 1594. XVIIth Century Up to 1609 Henri IV made great efforts to enhance Fontainebleau palace. He spent an enormous sum of money for that time on building work: 2 440 850 livres. The dauphin, the future Louis XIII, was born at the palace in 1601 and baptised there in 1606. |
He had already been chosen as King of Poland but, on the death of his brother, he left that country in secret to take the French throne.
He was Catholic, debauched and cruel and was devoid of the qualities required of a sovereign. Wars of religion and the attempted seizure of power by Henri de Guise (also a Catholic) caused considerable bloodshed throughout the country.
In July 1589, in alliance with Henri of Navarre (the future Henri IV, who at the time was protestant), he attacked Paris to get back his power. He was assassinated by the monk Jacques Clément.
Catherine de Medici died in the same year.

The end of his reign was a rich period for trade and industry.
The navy was expanded, finances improved and agriculture experienced a prosperity never before achieved.
He escaped one assassination attempt in 1594, but succumbed to another on May 14th 1610 perpetrated in Paris by Ravaillac.

La porte Dauphine donnait sur un pont enjambant le fossé (comblé aujourd'hui) séparant la cour ovale de la cour des offices.
